And yet…I can walk into a Dunham’s, MC Sports or even the “outdoor” section of most department stores and instantly become enthralled with the sporting equipment and get lost in the aisles of baseball bats, footballs and tennis rackets.
What’s up with that?
I ran into a sporting good’s store last Saturday purely to purchase one thing: leather oil for my drying out ball glove. I came out of there with a new hard ball and the oil. The only reason I left with only one unplanned product was because the rest of the family was waiting in the van. I don’t need anything new from the sporting store. And yet, when I walked in, I was instantly aware that I could spend at least two hours in there, walking around, trying on ball gloves, checking out the tennis accessories, picking up different footballs, trying out a hacky-sack.
Perhaps it’s because my boys are getting older? Perhaps because Pete is playing soccer now? Not sure. I don’ think this is a recent development though. I think it’s just a good old fashioned man thing.
You think it’s some deeply suppressed desire to have a good catch with my Dad? You think I’ve not grown up properly and moved on? Am I stuck in teenager mode here or do the other guys who read this blog out there (all like 3 of you?) experience the same thing?
